The Answer To The Question Of Whos Got It Better Than Us

By Patrice McCoy

The United States has a been called the land of opportunity nearly since its discovery by explorers. Recently, however, there has been a shift in the perception of the country. Instead of a country with unlimited potential, some would say that the U. S. Has fallen off the pedestal and has become rather pedestrian. To put things into perspective, one has to ask the naysayers whos got it better than us?

One response is to point out the successful financial market. People from all backgrounds, across all pay grades, have the ability to invest their money into the stock exchange. It does not matter how small or large the investment may be, it is open to every person who wants to participate.

Then there is the chance to own a home. Property ownership has been coined as the American Dream. Yet, any person who has steady employment and money for a small down payment can become a homeowner. To encourage this practice, mortgage companies offer financing. While there have been recent housing problems, many people continue to make owning a home a reality.

Then there is the wide variety of career paths open to anyone with desire and skill. Within those career pathways, there are many chances to advance and move higher within an organization. Starting at entry level means that there is always the potential for promotion. No one is stuck in a position based on ethnicity, gender, or even religious affiliation. If an individual is dedicated, no one can hold them back.

Another fantastic facet is public education. All children are guaranteed a free public education from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Every child gets the exact same opportunity. On top of the education, students from poverty get free or reduced cost breakfasts and lunches. If students are disabled in any manner, they still get the same education and have special services at no cost to their family.

After public education, any student can attend a post-secondary institution. Community colleges, technical colleges, trade schools, and universities are open to any student who has the desire and ability. There is even financial assistance, grants, scholarships, and loans that can help provide monetary support for attendance, supplies, books, fees, and housing.

Some individuals prefer a different option all together. Those with an entrepreneurial bent are limited only by their own personal drive. The country's financial base is built upon small business owners. These creative individuals can build their business to whatever level they choose. In fact, many small business owners today work from their home computer. The surge of Internet businesses has created a market that had not been considered previously.

So, when the local newspaper, magazine, or radio station begins to discuss the sudden backpedaling of the country, choose to think about the many aspects which counter their perspective. Rather than listening to the rhetoric, remember the qualities that answers the question of whos got it better than us. No one has it better.
