The Importance Of Growing Organic Vegetables

By Leslie Griffith

There is a global trend towards a more healthy lifestyle. This incorporates the physical activity in which people engage as well as the food that they consume. An all natural farm, is one of the best ways to ensure that you consume healthy, chemical free food. It also has its financial benefits. This is why so many people are interested in growing organic vegetables.

The soil within which the food will be planted plays a crucial role in its definition as having been organically grown. Care must be taken to ensure that the land selected for planting has not been contaminated by harmful chemicals. This often happens through industrial and residential dumping as well as chemical spills. Once the safety of the soil has been established, attention can be turned to preparing it for planting.

Preparing the soil for planting is the first step that an organic farmer must take. A great way to do this is by composting. This is essentially a method of allowing biodegradable waste such as peelings and leaves to decay and break down. When these are added to the soil they make the land more fertile and eliminate the need for harmful fertilizers.

Even pest control can be done organically. Changes in technology and lifestyle as well as the demands of an ever growing market has encouraged the use of commercial fertilizers. These factory made pesticides often contain many harmful chemicals. It is for this reason that those who use them are often warned to observe a particular waiting period between application and harvesting in order to ensure that the produce reaped is fit for consumption. Additionally, those whose job it is to apply the chemical, are advised to wear the requisite protective gear. All these precautions hint at the powerful and dangerous nature of these chemicals. There are, however, safer ways to keep plants in your garden pest free.

One safe method of banishing harmful parasites from vegetable gardens is to grow certain plants among them. Garlic, for one is known to repel several pests and is planted in many gardens to keep unwanted guests away. Ashes can be used to line the circumference of the farm area to discourage slugs from entering the garden.

These natural pest controlling methods also save money as they reduce the need for commercial pesticides many of which are harmful especially when they are not used as per directions. They also help to prevent hefty medical bills since they are less likely to result in harm to the health of the consumer or the person who actually applies the pesticide. One of the reasons pest applicators are required to wear protective gear when working is to protect themselves from the harmful chemicals they are applying to the food.

When it is time for the produce to be reaped, steps must be taken to ensure that the activity is chemical free and as natural as possible. If they are to be preserved prior to sale then safe natural preservation methods should be employed. Chemical free harvesting and preservation methods will likely require more time but is safer for all involved.

There is no denying the value and importance of growing organic vegetables. The time and effort that it takes to establish and maintain these practices is well rewarded in the long run. This is so not only because of the production associated costs that are avoided but also because the health and well being of consumers and farm workers are preserved.
