What Is Cellulite?

By Loretta Hook

If you are worried about unattractive cellulite that seems to be most prone for women in the butt, thigh and calves then you will find this article very informative. Learning what causes cellulite and how to get rid of cellulite are the first steps in eliminating it. Cellulite is not just for fat or overweight people. Thin women have cellulite as well.

What The Heck Is Cellulite?

Everyone knows what cellulite looks like....it is the cottage cheese look that is on your thigh and other parts of your body that seems very stubborn to move. But what is cellulite? The correct version in medical terms is adiposis oedematous, dermopanniculosis and gynoid lipodystrophy. Sounds confusing doesn't it. The simple fact is it is just fat. Although the fat is not the cause of the bumpy look, it is the globs of fat that are buried deep underneath the skin that pushes against the connective tissue. As the fat grows larger it takes up more area under the skin, which in turn puts a lot of pressure on the connective tissue. The fat pressing again the tissue causes the bumpy look that is so unattractive. The more pockets of fat there are, the more lumps and bumps there are, and it keeps expanding further out.

If you can imagine baking a tray of buns and as they begin to rise the overflow the top of the pan, and they keep expanding and getting larger. There is no where for those buns to go so they press up against each other and literally double in size. You are left with a nice tray of buns which oddly enough looks like the uneven texture of cellulite! This is the same result of the underlying fat pressing up against your skin...it causes the bumpy look we all hate.

A young person has more elasticity to their skin so it remains smooth. As you reach puberty and beyond, hormones come into play which results in your skin becoming much stiffer and less elastic. And then as we age further the outer layer of skin weakens making the cellulite much more noticeable. But knowing what cellulite is doesn't make it any better! There are millions of dollar spent each year on products trying to get rid of cellulite, and whether you are thin or not it still affects 85 percent of women.

Why Women Have Cellulite-Why Men Don't

Women's skin is generally thinner than a man's skin. The epidermis in a male is much thicker, so when that body fat is pressing against the skin, it doesn't change the connective tissue in the same way as it does with a woman.

Another reason is because male and female skin is different. The female fat cells sit within side by side rows, so when the fat expands it is pushed upwards, like squeezing icing out of a tube. It just pops out at the top. A male's fat cells are contained in a criss-crossed pattern. The space inside each criss cross is much smaller, so it doesn't pop out the top in the same way. A man will tend to create a big blob of fat if it does penetrate the connective tissue.

Wearing panties that are to tight will constrict the blood flow in your lower body, and this causes the development of cellulite to speed up. It isn't necessary to wear granny underwear but something a little loser or less constricting will generally help the cause.

What Is The Cause Of Cellulite?

There are a couple reasons for this type of body fat. If you are a woman, that would be the main one. Most men do not get cellulite, but there are a few other reasons. Hormonal Factors: Fluctuating hormones can cause the development of cellulite. Prolactin, thyroid hormones, non adrenal, estrogen and insulin all play a roll in the development of cellulite. Genetics: If your grandmother or mother had cellulite, there is a very good chance you will if you have similar characteristics such as poor circulation, slow metabolism, and also how your body fat is arranged underneath your skin. Diet: A poor diet will definitely cause cellulite. It stresses the skin causing it to fail. A diet that has a lot of complex carbohydrates and lean protein with good fats will improve the quality of your skin. Lymph glands: Our lymph glands role is to remove extra fluids and waste from the tissue. When the lymph glands are not working properly waste and toxins build up in the tissues and cellulite is the end result.

Prevention of Cellulite

A healthy diet is the first step in preventing or getting rid of cellulite. Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein and good fats will help you remove the toxins from your body. Toxins are stored in fat cells, which expands the fat cell causing the cellulite. Stop smoking, not just to get rid of cellulite, but for better general health. Start the day with a glass of hot water mixed with the juice of one lemon, this cleanses the liver, and continue to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Your diet accounts for 80% of how you look. Exercise and genetics play a small but important role as well.
