Making Sure Inexpensive Glasses Remain Comfortable Long Term

By Dorothea Garner

The only reason to spend large amounts of money on spectacle frames is when consumers wish to show off an expensive brand name. Other than this, inexpensive glasses can be chosen to be as comfortable, stylish and stable as designer brands. A skilled optometrist is needed to help one find the perfect lenses, but in terms of frames, a skilled assistant will do more to make frames comfortable than a costly brand will.

Well fitting frames don't move away from the face or nose when the head is bent forward. The part of the frames that ensures this aspect of the fit is the arm. Arms should be the correct distance apart for the individual face. Narrow arms will cause pain after long periods of wear, whilst wide frames will easily slip off the face.

Consumers don't generally have the knowledge needed to select the frames of the right width. Experienced assistants can help enormously. They can also adjust frames that need slight changes in dimension. Frames that are extremely poorly fitting cannot be adjusted. In this case, consumers will need to find a different frame.

Frames that fit correctly will only touch a portion of the temples. Those that touch the entire temple area are too small and those that don't touch the skin at all are likely to slip. Spectacles that are too small can cause pain after long periods of wear.

The nose pads are an important part for comfort and stability. Pads that are too hard and tight will leave skin imprints that eventually last long after the frames are removed. It's important to have frames adjusted when they cause visible marks. Poorly angled pads will also play a role in fit, but this is easily adjusted.

The material of nose pads varies enormously. The softest material is silicone, and consumers can often have their pads exchanged for this material without additional charge. Many wearers don't need a particularly soft material for their nose pads, as long as they are well fitted. However, those with sensitive, oily skin wear silicone more easily because it is softer and doesn't slip easily.

Nose pads which are particularly flexible are better able to adapt to different facial features. Silicone is extremely flexible, and can conform to contours. Titanium is the hardest option, and is chosen by those who find that their frames easily slip out of place.

Light weight spectacles are often far more comfortable and stable. Heavy frames can cause pain around the ear area. When frames need to be worn all day, it's important that they remain in place and don't slip easily.

The firmest silicone has a high density that allows it to offer slip resistance as well as stability. This is a material best suited to those who require stable frames that resist perspiration. Those who want the most durable material for their pads generally prefer polycarbonate, which resists erosion and wear. The weight of pads can effect the overall comfort of spectacles. Inexpensive glasses that are well fitting will have the perfect dimensions of arms, nose pads and size.
