How You can Get Past Obstacles to Better Fitness

By Lance Briton

Becoming more fit may be one of your goals but you may find that something always gets in the way. Excuses like having no time, physical limitations, and lack of motivation are easy to find when it comes to avoiding an exercise routine. Here are some ideas to help get beyond typical obstacles to getting fit.

One apparently strange but not uncommon reason people don't exercise is that they feel too out of shape to begin. Since the point of exercise is to improve your condition, this doesn't make sense, but it still deters some people. It can be intimidating to start exercising if you've been inactive for a long time. Perhaps you tried something that was too advanced for your level and concluded you couldn't keep up with an exercise program. The trick is to begin at a pace that's comfortable for you, whatever that may be. Your doctor can advise you about what type of exercise is appropriate if you have any illness or serious condition. If you feel out of shape, you might want to start walking regularly, as this is something you can begin as slowly as you want, and increase as you get fitter.

Boredom is a common problem a few weeks after beginning a new workout routine. This is why it's recommended to vary your workout routine every few weeks. Your home exercise bike workout will be more effective as well as less boring if you vary what you do because it keeps the muscles from adapting. Look into taking different exercise classes and vary which machines you use at the gym and how you use them. If you lift weights, try varying the focus of your training sessions. A good way to do this is to vary the number of reps and sets that you do as well as the size of the weights that you use. Keep your workout fresh and interesting by switching up your routine.

When people who start out with unrealistic expectations, they are more likely to quit if they don't see immediate results. You have to understand that improving your health and level of fitness doesn't happen overnight. It will take longer than you may expect to reach your goal, whether that's to lose a certain number of pounds or to build muscle. Doing nothing won't get you to your goal but exercising will get you there eventually. Try to approach your fitness program with a go with the flow; attitude rather than expecting specific results in a short time.

If you set your mind to it you will find ways around all of these obstacles to getting fit. There's always a way to make time in your schedule or find an activity that is suitable for you. Sometimes the best thing you can do is reorganize your priorities no matter how hard that maybe it's going to be worth your effort. Keep these tips in mind as you find your way around these obstacles and meet you own personal fitness goals.
